Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (Miscarriage)

Introduction

Recurrent pregnancy loss is defined as two or more consecutive miscarriages. The cause of miscarriage is found in only about 60% of couples. There are various causes including: genetic abnormalities, hormonal deficiencies, untreated hypothyroidism, poorly controlled diabetes, congenital uterine anomalies and uterine adhesions, certain asymptomatic vaginal infections, autoimmune disorders, clotting disorders, and smoking.

Treatment

Treatment is based on the underlying cause, which is determined by evaluating the patient's history, physical exam, blood work, imaging studies, and possibly genetic testing. Treatment options could include hormone supplementation, antibiotics, short-term use of blood thinners, or surgery, depending on the source of the problem.
